I hit a mark during a race — what's the correct penalty turn?
After touching a mark under Rule 31, you clear yourself under Rule 44.2 by promptly making one turn in the same direction, including one tack and one gybe — well clear of other boats. A tack alone, without the boom crossing on a gybe, doesn't satisfy the rule and leaves you still liable for disqualification.
